BK Nation Pays Tribute to the Soldiers Who Fought And Died at The Battle of Fort Pillow on April 12, 1864
Greetings BK Nation, its been since January when I emailed you my last newsletter, so I wanted to let you know I’m alive and still kick’in. There is so much to get you caught up on so I’ll start with February-Black History Month. This year’s theme was “African Americans and Labor,” which focused on the significant contributions African Americans have made to the labor force throughout history. I am so proud of the “work” that many African Americans have done in the past and present, whether it was through physical labor, education, science, sports, literature and other aspects of American society, we are still reaping the benefits of their efforts today.
March was Women’s History Month and the theme for 2025 was "Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations," which highlighted the contributions of women in education and mentorship. This theme easily resonated with me as I thought about the countless women teachers I had in elementary and high school who helped shape me into the person I am today. Even so, the most impactful educator wasn’t in the classroom, she was at home--my mother, and she will always be the number one educator in my life.
Anniversary of “A Time For Courage”
It’s hard to believe that my book, “A Time For Courage” is a little over one year old. Published on March 4, 2024, it has held its own under the category of Black & African American Historical Fiction on Amazon. The novel ranked 81st in this category in November 2024. I have learned early as an author that rankings are good, but the support and lasting relationships of people such as BK Nation far exceeds fame and fortune, and I pray I will never forget that lesson. If you haven’t purchased “A Time For Courage” I hope you will put it on your bucket list this year to do so…..And of course, once you finish reading the book, leave an honest and thoughtful review on Amazon.
Ken Richmond Visits Fort Pillow on 161st Anniversary
On April 12, 2025, yours truly visited Fort Pillow TN for my annual book signing tour. Please view the pictures on my website. The book signing was a total success and once again, I met so many wonderful people who not only purchased my book, but had a passion for history, especially the American Civil War. I want to personally give a shout out to Mr. Robby Tidwell, Area Manager, Fort Pillow State Historic Park and his staff for their warm hospitality in making me feel welcome and helping me set up for my book signing.
For those that may not know, the Battle of Fort Pillow was fought on April 12, 1864 during the American Civil War when Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest assaulted the fort, resulting in the deaths of over 300 union soldiers, many of whom were African American. Fort Pillow is the setting for my book.
PARTING THOUGHTS
They say reading is fundamental. That was true then and its even truer now. Modern technology coupled with fast-paced life styles have made it challenging for the average person to spend time reading, especially young people. We need to reverse this trend. I’m calling on each BK Nation member to make a commitment to purchase an age appropriate book and present it to a young person. I’ll bet their eyes will sparkle as you start them on their incredible journey of self-discovery through the written word.
